The Reviews Are In..

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Here’s another great interview with MYMAG cofounder Magnus Greaves.

Conducted by Magtastic Blogsplosion, it’s slightly less business-oriented than some of Magnus’s recent interviews, focusing more on the magazines themselves. The interview is the final portion of four Magtastic posts about MYMAG. The first three are in-depth reviews of each MYMAG currently available, so if you’d like to know a little more about what’s in each magazine before you buy, check out the reviews below.

Behind MYMAG…

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

To help explain the MYMAG idea, all three of our founders have been giving interviews over the past few months to discuss the genesis of the concept. Now, though, comes the most in-depth MYMAG interview yet, conducted by MrMagazine.com’s Samir Husni with MYMAG founder Magnus Greaves.

Magnus — formerly the founder of magazine publisher Doubledown Media not only gives a penetrating glimpse into MYMAG itself; he also expounds with insight about the publishing industry as a whole and how it has developed (or, rather, backtracked) in recent years. MYMAG represents a new publishing concept, and not everyone, I think, understands exactly where we’re headed. Here, Magnus lays it all out, explaining concisely what MYMAG is about. The interview, in fact, makes me think Magnus would be a great choice to do a MYMAG himself although I’m not sure if he has a big enough fan club (yet!).

“I think we all have people we look up to, whether it’s an actor or a scientist or an academic,” Magnus tells Husni. “And we hope that a magazine that we like will do an article about them, and we hope that the writer they chose is going to have a good day and dig up the information that we want. MYMAG flips that around and takes all the death work out of it — we just hand it over to that particular individual. Collaborating with Brett Ratner was phenomenal. He knew every article of every magazine that he wanted and where he wanted it placed. He knew the message that he wanted to get across and the personal stuff he wanted to contribute. So the end product allows one of his fans to really get a great glimpse of what makes him tick.”

Aoki laid bare…

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Check out Steve Aoki’s interview with MYMAG. So not too long ago, MYMAG went to the Barracuda store in Los Angeles for a DIMMAK launch (regular readers know I’m a fan) and pinned Steve down to take us behind the inspirations for his MYMAG, AOKI.

He explains his love of NYLON and Monster Children (unquestionably one of Australia’s coolest magazines, and a favorite of mine). He talks about BPM being the first magazine to put him on its cover — and, like all men, lets us in on his love for Gisele (you’ll get to see quite a lot of her in the V magazine section of AOKI!) He also pays tribute to his friend and mentor DJ AM, who passed away last year and to whom AOKI is dedicated.

The highlight is Steve’s insight into his personal section of AOKI — it’s filled with backstage/onstage/jumping offstage photos, all of which were taken by The Cobrasnake, whose star has risen alongside Steve’s; their careers have progressed in tandem over the years. Steve explains how they got started (dragging records through the streets of Tokyo!) and why his photos are so important to him. (more…)

The Cobra Snake will make you look hot….

Monday, January 11th, 2010

img_8090

If you’ve been to Los Angeles, you’ve seen his name plastered on floors, walls and pillars; if you’ve been to a fashion party anywhere in the world, he’s probably taken your photo. The Cobrasnake, a.k.a. Mark Hunter, has, at 24, become one of the hottest party photographers around. He’s a permanent fixture at every Fashion Week, and an entire section of Steve Aoki’s MYMAG is dedicated to his photos of the DJ backstage, onstage and all over the world (You can check these out on Aoki’s MYMAG preview!)

As energetic as Aoki’s sets, Hunter’s photos capture what it is to party today, whatever city you’re in (Tokyo, London and Paris are just a few of his favorites). In addition to his photography, the Cobrasnake has now released his own clothing brand. The highlight is unquestionably the printed tees, which feature Aoki cover art. In fact every graphic used is pretty fantastic. Imagine American Apparel, only far cooler (and more exclusive!)

There are Psychics at Vanity Fair

tiger-woods-vanity-fair-500x716

With Tiger Woods seemingly topping every “Most Talked-About of 2009″ list imaginable (not bad for a story that didn’t break until after Thanksgiving!), it seems only appropriate that he would appear on the cover of Vanity Fair’s February issue. Of course, the best part is that Annie Leibovitz’s stark photos were shot before all hell broke loose and the golfer found himself a retire-the-trophy poster child for the man fallen from grace.

On the cover, Tiger, shirtless, surly, bulked-up and holding two barbells, is accompanied by the headline “The Mystery of a Sports Star We Thought We Knew” — probably not the caption he had hoped for when he posed for the shots all those months ago. Amusing as that is, though, Buzz Bissinger’s accompanying article is the jewel in the issue’s crown. Wonderfully scathing, it’s the most astute and hilarious take on a scandal marked so far mostly by a ceaseless parade of dreadful tabloid “investigations.” Yes, I know — enough Tiger, already! But if you can bring yourself to read one last article on the wandering Mr. Woods, make it this one.

Best. Cover. Ever.

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Olivia Munn has now officially revealed her new MYMAG cover — and it’s everything she said it would be. No pie, no bullshit — just . . . boobs! Now, I know Olivia has been on the cover of Playboy, but dare I say — because I’m obviously not biased — that this cover blows that one out of the water. (Oh, and there’s actually more than one picture of her in MYMAG, something that apparently didn’t occur to Hugh Hefner.) And, as she did with that issue of Playboy, Olivia promises to sign and return every copy of of Hey, Olivia! that you send to her. With luck, her hand will still be able to hold a pen after she’s signed them all! (more…)
