So the Academy Award nominee’s have been announced (it was the very capable Anne Hathaway who helped reveal the nominees) and it’s clear this year the academy are determined to do things a little differently. In the past decade ratings for the Oscars have been flagging – badly. Last year the ceremony itself improved – the musical number was far better than I think many had expected. But this year with Steve Martin hosting for the third time and Alec Baldwin for the first, we might see some comedy at the Oscars worth laughing at.
In terms of the actual awards the academy has changed in so much that best picture nominations have been increased to ten. An obvious attempt to include the more popular, less dramatic films of the year to hopefully bring in the numbers these box office smashes attract at the cinema seems a smart one. All the nominations in all categories seem solid (perhaps with the exception of Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side”) and I am hoping against hope “Avatar” does not win best picture.
