This month, I was surprised to hear, marks Interview magazine’s 40th anniversary. With so many publications barely making it past their first few issues — and then barely scraping by even after getting past that seemingly insurmountable hurdle — Interview’s 40th-anniversary issue is an admirable reminder of a magazine that has pulled through modernity’s whims and come out the other side, as intriguing as the day the first issue was published. The new issue seems to be an homage to the stars who have lent themselves, their words and their images to Interview’s pages over the years: Sean Penn, Charles Bukowski, Muhammad Ali, Jack Nicholson, Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol are a few of those who jumped out at me. The collection of portraits and quotations makes me wish I could sneak into the Interview archives and lock myself in for a few days. Someone might notice, and I’d probably be swiftly ejected, but it would definitely be worth it.
