Welcome to MYMAG

Welcome to MYMAG. If you’ve managed to get as far as this blog, I hope you’ve had a chance to preview some of the first magazines. Both Steve Aoki and Brett Ratner have filled 108 pages with the things they love. Although their fans will relish these publications, you don’t need to be a fan to appreciate the terrific content with which these pages have been filled. Many people, thinking of most other magazines, would surely be skeptical of the phrase “filled with content,” but in MYMAG’s case, it’s the truth. One advertiser, five pages of advertisements, 104 pages of editorial quality. In an age when magazines seem to have more ad pages than actual articles, it’s refreshing to have more quality than anything else.

Across the world, magazines are folding almost daily. The industry’s outlook is vastly different from a few decades ago, and I’m sure many still lament the loss of their favorite publications. Books published 50 years ago are still readily available in stores today, yet the magazines of a previous generation seem lost forever. It would be a shame to lose some of the most influential words and images of the age simply because no one ever had the opportunity — or the inclination — to publish them in hardback.

Not to disparage today’s magazines; we’re lucky to be able to include content from some of the best current publications as well. Although the editor of each issue will explain in his own words what led him to select the magazines he chose, I hope here to give you some of the reasons we find these titles special, and keep you up to date with news about both the editors and the publications included in their MYMAGs.

This is not an insipid corporate blog; we intend to keep you informed about news our editors would want you to hear. I hope that those who read each MYMAG will be introduced to the writing of a period they might have missed (or wish to relive), and will discover some of the things they might be missing today. In an era of so much media choice, many of us, ironically, are afraid to venture into the new, to make a different choice. Maybe if someone else shares their choices with us, we’ll be a little less afraid.
